The start-up of fuel 21 GmbH & Co. KG in summer 2006 opened up a new market with very promising potential for Nordzucker AG, one of the leading European sugar producers. This is because alternative fuels produced from biomass are urgently required to cut CO2 emissions, and reduce dependence on crude oil imports. The European Union has set itself the target of replacing 10% of conventional fuels with biofuels by 2020.

fuel 21 produces bioethanol from sugar beet. Bioethanol is the most widely used biofuel worldwide. Its production from local biomass also opens up new sustainable prospects for European farmers.
